Low Back

Explain the disc and its role in causing back pain.

The spine is made up of two major components - the vertebrae (bone) and the disc (soft tissue). Other support structures compose the remainder of the spine anatomy. The disc has the distinction of providing cushion or support through the spine because of gravity and external weight effects. The location of the disc is between the vertebrae. Directly behind the disc and vertebrae are the spinal nerves and surrounding nerve tissues. It is when the disc becomes irritated or inflamed that the disc itself may put direct or indirect pressure on the nerve tissues. Any nerve tissue that becomes irritated usually precipitates pain. This pain could be located in the center of your back or radiate to other locations.
