Aquatics
Aqua Therapy
Each location offers a generous sized aquatic pool. All therapeutic pools are kept at a comfortable temperature of 92 - 94 degrees. The properties of water include buoyancy, which allows less weight bearing through the joints and resistance, which is patient controlled by the speed of the exercises. The pressures from the water assist in promoting circulation and decreasing swelling. The aquatic environment prepares patients for dry land exercises they may not be ready to perform. The warmth of the water and its calming effect will improve patients' tolerance to exercises and overall function. Our staff is fully trained in Aquatics applying all knowledge to individualizing programs.
Specific Uses of the Aquatic Pool:
General Physical Therapy
Often Aquatics are combined with dry land therapeutic exercises and/or manual therapy. The following conditions are treated during regularly scheduled physical therapy visits:
- Low Back Pain or Spinal Disorders
- Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Injuries, Sprains or Strains
- Post-Surgical, Joint or Ligament replacement, Spinal procedures
- Chronic Pain Conditions, Fibromyalgia, RSD
Arthritis Foundation Classes
Classes that are sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation YMCA are offered in all three clinics. These sessions last approximately 8 weeks and run through the year. They consist of two classes per week lasting one hour. All the classes are structured (a series of specifically designed exercises) and taught by staff certified through the Arthritis Foundation (a 10 hour specialized training workshop). Class size varies on interest; an average class is 8 - 10 people. Cost for each session is $100. Classes are a great way for those interested in continuing physical conditioning after physical therapy or for maintaining personal goals. Any adult with arthritis may join the program. It is not necessary to know how to swim. All those with surgical backgrounds, multiple or severe joint problems are encouraged to speak directly with their doctors.
